2 Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Physical Therapy Sessions While Recovery From a Back Injury

by admin

After suffering from a back injury in an accident, you are probably already under the care of a physician. As part of your care plan, they may have decided that you could benefit from attending physical therapy sessions to help with your symptoms and increase your mobility.

If you are either getting ready to start your sessions or have already gone to a few, you may be wondering if there is anything that you can do to help to increase the success of your sessions. If so, below are a couple of things that you can do to get the most out of your physical therapy sessions.

1.  Communicate All Past and Current Symptoms with Your Therapist

One of the main things you can do to help increase the effectiveness of your therapy sessions is to establish excellent communication with your therapist. Not only do you need to be direct and honest about how you feel you are progressing and how each exercise affects your back, but you also need to have a good history to give them a broad view of your injury.

One way you can do this is to start a therapy journal. At the beginning of the journal, describe the initial symptoms you experienced directly after the accident. Also explain how these symptoms and your limited mobility have affected your life, with subsequent entries detailing any improvements or new symptoms you experience during therapy and at-home exercises.  Having this detailed account can help your therapist tailor a targeted therapy regimen specifically for you.

2.  Set up a Schedule at Home to Perform Any Exercises Your Therapist Gives You

Along with having direct, detailed communication with your therapist, another thing you can do while undergoing physical therapy is to realize that the sessions do not stop once your appointments are over. The therapist will give you exercises to perform at home to help with the progress you make during your sessions.

To help increase the likelihood you will perform these exercises regularly, set up set schedule times when you will do them. Set alarms on your phone, pencil in the times on your calendar, or enlist the help of family members to remind you to do these sessions at specific times. Getting into the habit of doing your exercises can help ensure that you do them.

When you are going to therapy sessions to help with the healing process for your back injury, going the extra mile by fully communicating with your therapist and keeping up with your at-home exercise schedule can help immensely. Speak with your physical therapist for personalized advice and guidance on what else you can do to supplement your sessions and work together to help make your sessions as productive and impactful on your recovery as possible.

About Me

Health Issues Common In Women

My name is Shawna Banks and this is a blog that focuses on health issues that affect women. I became interested in women's health when my sister began having medical problems. After her condition worsened, she went to see a doctor. After her diagnosis and successful treatment, I helped her research the different kinds of health conditions that are common in women. By becoming knowledgeable about these types of problems, we can keep ourselves healthier. I hope that when you read this blog, it will help you to identify symptoms that shouldn't be ignored. If necessary, you can schedule an appointment with your physician as soon as possible.
