How To Recover From Liposuction

by admin

There are many misconceptions about the purpose of liposuction. It is not a weight loss procedure. Instead, liposuction is used to remove small and localized deposits of fat to shape your body. The procedure will not usually remove more than ten pounds of fat. If you feel like you still would like to pursue this procedure, there are several things you will need to know before the treatment can become a success.

You May Need to Lose Weight

You may need to lose weight before the liposuction procedure. Those who are the best candidates for liposuction are already at a healthy weight. Also, you will need to not be suffering from certain health conditions that could place you at risk. If you have already had surgery in the area where you will receive the treatment, the area will need to be fully healed before you can have liposuction performed there.

You Will Need Follow-Ups

Before you engage in liposuction, make sure to find out about the follow up meetings and make sure that you will be able to make these meetings. Some plastic surgeons will want to meet with you one day after the surgery and will then want to meet with you one week after the surgery. However, there may be other follow up procedures for a different plastic surgeon.

There Might Be Pain and Discomfort

After liposuction, you will likely experience pain and discomfort. You will want to consult with your plastic surgeon regarding what pain medications you should take to treat the pain. You will also need to be prepared for visible swelling that will decrease over time.

You May Need to Stay Overnight

While liposuction is often a day procedure, you will sometimes need to stay overnight. This is especially true if a general anesthetic was used. If you have had a general anesthetic used, you will not be able to drive home and you will instead need to have someone else drive you home.

When you have a small treatment area, your doctor may be able to use a local anesthetic. This allows you to return home after the surgery. Also, if the liposuction is only being performed on the lower part of the body, you may be able to use an epidural anesthetic instead. This anesthetic only has a recovery period that lasts a few hours.

Seroma Can Be Removed

After liposuction, you may experience seroma. This is a byproduct of having white and red blood cells removed through the process of liposuction. It is not a serious complication and will go away on its own. However, if you would like to accelerate the disappearance of seroma, your plastic surgeon can drain it with a syringe. While there are undesirable side effects, such as seroma, they can be managed and you will recover before you know it.
