What You Can Expect Before, During, And After Your Colonoscopy Procedure

by admin

A colonoscopy is a procedure that permits your doctor to examine your colon; to do so, your doctor will insert a thin tube outfitted with a camera into your rectum. It is an important preventative measure that can aid in early cancer detection.

If you are suffering from digestive issues, a colonoscopy can also help your doctor diagnose your ailment. Read on to learn what to expect, before, during, and after a colonoscopy.

Before

The day before your colonoscopy, you will need to follow strict instructions that will cleanse your colon so that your doctor has a clear view. Prep usually involves a diet of clear liquids; you will also have to drink a specified quantity of cleansing fluid that functions like a laxative. Stay close to the restroom, and don't plan any taxing physical activities the day of your colonoscopy prep.

If you don't adhere to your preparation instructions, your doctor may not be able to view all of the necessary components during the procedure. Do not deviate from the instructions, or you may have to repeat the process.

During

Many patients find the actual colonoscopy to be less distressing than the required prep. Your doctor will give you a sedative before beginning the colonoscopy. Patients report little discomfort thanks to the sedative; instead, they find themselves extremely relaxed.

If you experience discomfort during the procedure, such as cramping or pain, speak up. You do not have to suffer; your doctor can increase your sedative to make you more comfortable. Usually, the entire procedure is complete in about an hour.

After

Should your doctor spot any areas of concern, you may have to report for additional testing, such as x-rays, a biopsy, or ultrasound.

Due to the use of the sedatives during your colonoscopy, you will need to have someone else drive you home. It is common to feel sleepy during the hours after your procedure. Be prepared to rest until the effects of the sedative completely wear off.

Your doctor will give you specific instructions concerning your post-colonoscopy diet. The procedure can be irritating to your colon, and it is best to adjust your diet accordingly for a couple days after the procedure. Soft, bland foods are usually recommended.

Stay away from spicy dishes, greasy foods, foods high in fiber, and "heavy" meals that are difficult for your body to digest.

If you find that your normal diet upsets your stomach, feel free to revert back to the bland, easy-to-digest foods for a couple more days.

The colonoscopy dehydrates the body. Refuel with water, juice, and electrolyte-based drinks.
