There are a lot of stereotypes out there about people with glasses. Some are good – that you are intelligent or professional. On the other hand, you have old sayings like "men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses" and Urkel's big, black nerd glasses.
But if you think the choice to have laser eye surgery done is mainly about looks and vanity, consider how many activities would be a little more convenient without glasses or contacts. Many of those activities are, in fact, the ones that are best for staying healthy – forms of exercise! Looking at it that way, lasik surgery can certainly make it easier for you to be fit and active.
Swimming is a wonderful form of exercise – and it's also just plain fun. But trying to swim while wearing glasses is anything but enjoyable. Many people just take their glasses off in the pool while more serious swimmers sometimes consider contact lenses.
Glasses are a no-no for lots of other sports, too. In contact sports like football, wearing glasses could mean having them shoved into your face or shattering; many teams and leagues ban them outright. And even in low-contact sports, the risk of damaging glasses is high, meaning special shatter-resistant goggles might be your only option.
Skiing and Snowboarding
Sports that usually use goggles, like skiing and snowboarding, mean having to try to fit your glasses under your goggles or getting prescription goggles – and you definitely don't want to try skiing if you can't see where you're going.
What About Contacts?
Contacts are an option for most of these activities, but they also have their downsides. When you're being very active, you're likely to sweat a great deal. And when that sweat runs into your eyes, it can leave salt behind on your contacts, irritating your eyes.
And swimming in contacts is a definite no-no – the Food and Drug Administration recommends removing contact lenses when swimming to reduce the risk of serious eye infection.
That used to leave expensive prescription swimming goggles as the only option for people who wanted to be able to see while swimming. Now, lasik means not having to worry about how to bring your prescription to the pool.
In the end, of course, it will be up to you to make the commitment to regular exercise. But if having laser eye surgery can remove one aggravation from the path to fun fitness, that's just another point in its favor. To learn more, contact a company like New Vision Eye Center.
My name is Shawna Banks and this is a blog that focuses on health issues that affect women. I became interested in women's health when my sister began having medical problems. After her condition worsened, she went to see a doctor. After her diagnosis and successful treatment, I helped her research the different kinds of health conditions that are common in women. By becoming knowledgeable about these types of problems, we can keep ourselves healthier. I hope that when you read this blog, it will help you to identify symptoms that shouldn't be ignored. If necessary, you can schedule an appointment with your physician as soon as possible.
